It was supposed to happen yesterday afternoon but got postponed on account of weather, but today the first big blimp showdown in some twenty-five years, the Independence Airship Invitational, was held over the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey. The combatant blimps: DIRECTV, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, and Hangar One Vodka. They started racing around the Statue of Liberty with the finish line in mid-town New York City. DIRECTV was said to have taken the early lead, but was passed by Hangar One Vodka and then Horizon BCBS. DIRECTV remained in the back of the pack for the rest of the race. I thought that Hangar One had surged ahead from my angle, but apparently Horizon BCBS was actually in the lead and won with what was said to be a three length victory. Congratulations to all the participants. It was so much fun to watch. Hope they do it again soon! After all, DIRECTV’s gotta be wanting a grudge match! ;D
This is my video of the big race (at 2.5X the actual speed) which spans much of the Hudson River race course from the Wall Street area to around its midtown end. It was filmed from the Union Square area.
Along the way you can see landmarks that identify where they are in the race. In the lower Manhattan area, you can see the Jersey City headquarters of Goldman Sachs on the NJ side of the Hudson, around 15th Street you can see Google’s headquarters and near the midtown finish you can see the Silver Towers and MIMA.
