That was some downpour! But even with the rain falling by the bucket (not to mention thunder and lightning!), these construction workers making repairs to the side of a New York City building kept on going! Kind of amazing they weren’t ordered to stop given the multiple weather advisories and dangerous conditions.

Whoever said that lightning doesn’t strike twice was wrong.  I caught on video three direct hits to the Empire State Building during the nasty lightning / thunder storm after midnight on April 13, 2011.  I actually saw a fourth, but sadly wasn’t filming at the time.  Oh well. That’s just ridiculous — the most hits I’ve ever seen before on the ESB in one night has been two. Amazing and awesome!

Lights Shut off for Earth Hour 2011 in New York City

Posted by LG On March - 26 - 2011

Earth Hour, the  annual worldwide event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) that takes a stand against climate change, occurred from 8:30-9:30pm on Saturday March 26.  I filmed New York City skyline as the lights turned off.

First the Chrysler Building lights went out.  30 Rock was next, (although the famous GE sign lights never went off).  4 Times Square and Bank of America Tower spires were next.  B of A’s crown followed.  Then the Empire State Building.  The rows of B of A’s crown took around a minute to fully turn off.

NYC’s 1/26/11 snowstorm featured rare thundersnow flashes — thunder and lightning during a winter snow storm. This was taken from the Union Square area in NYC looking over the west side and across the Hudson into New Jersey. Note: the visibility is very poor with the snow really coming down in this night video, but you can still see a few lightning flashes.

Huge fluffy snowflakes during the NYC snowstorm on 1/7/11. Big flakes, little accumulation.

New Year’s eve brought even more colorful light shows at the Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park) and Conde Nast (4 Times Square) with the Empire State Building still dressed up in Christmas Colors (*yawn*). Lots of nifty pulsing rainbow colors for the B of A and Conde Nast spires, and after midnight there were pinks, blues, greens. Right before midnight, the top part of the Bank of America Tower went dark with its lights turning off at the usual time. Kind of weird timing given the midnight celebration, they couldn’t have waited a few minutes just this one night?

If you watch carefully, you can catch a glimpse (a really small one!) of the celebratory fireworks at around the 2:41 mark on the right hand side of B of A toward the bottom. But they’re mostly obscured; blink and you’ll miss them. D

The footage was sped up 2X with roughly 7 minutes of video compressed into around 3 1/2 minutes.

This video of the Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park) light show was taken shortly after the lights went on just after 4:30pm and just before the sunset, which really beautifully shows off some of the angles of the building. The Conde Nast spire isn’t lit up initially but came on when it was a bit darker, as seen toward the end.

New York City and the rest of the east coast were hit with a nasty crippling blizzard the day after Christmas 2010. This is how it looked just after the snow started to fall around 11am. The visibility was getting poor to the point where the skyline was completely missing an hour later. Bizarrely, there were also some lightning flashes and thunder during the evening, uncharacteristic of winter storms — I thought I was seeing and hearing things, but news reports confirmed it! And there were also high winds just short of hurricane speed according to the weatherman. Pity the poor travelers on Amtrak and those trying to catch flights, as trains and planes came to a standstill. Glad to be inside during this mess!

The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in New York City gave us another light show earlier this evening and it was way funkier than the colorful shows from a couple of weeks ago.  When I first noticed that the lights were on again, the spire was blue, which matched colors of the Empire State Building’s celebration of Chanukah.   A spire at the neighboring  Condé Nast Building (4 Times Square) was also lit up in blue — I hadn’t seen that spire lit up in colored lights before.  Then the show began.   The two spires coordinated / dueled  in a mostly in unison strobe-like display where they changed colors  (purple, blue, red, yellow, green & sometimes black),  pulsed, spun,  turned on and off, and moved in waves.   Pretty wild stuff and a colorful addition to the NYC skyline!

Turns out that the Bryant Park Christmas Tree lighting celebration was going on around the same time; I’d guess the light show was part of it, or may have been planned to coincide with it.

Here’s the first part of the two part video (If you only want to watch one, I actually prefer part 2 –  further down below the jump — which has more color  but  less strobe-like pulsing):

And here’s part 2:

Video: Bank Of America Tower NYC Light Show 11/18/10

Posted by LG On November - 18 - 2010

Usually the spire of the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in NYC is lit up white or is dark.. This evening (11/18/10) there was a short light show that ended around 6pm, where it changed from purple to red to yellow to green to blue.before going dark. Looks like the Empire State Building is gonna have some company in the ‘adding colors to the Manhattan skyline department’. Pretty cool!

Here’s a shorter slideshow version taken a couple of days later: Read the rest of this entry »
