Fiery Sunset from Union Square NYC into New Jersey

Posted by LG On June - 3 - 2011

Here are some of my images from what’s known as “Manhattanhenge” when the setting sun aligns with the east / west streets on the NYC grid.  This year’s first Manhattanhenge was on 5/30/11 when the setting half sun could be seen from the middle of NYC cross streets and the second, with the full sun seen setting, was on 5/31.  I caught it from 14th and 5th Avenue.  (Another occurs in July 11-12).

It was amazing to watch!

The DIRECTV blimp paid NYC another visit over the weekend where it was here to float over the NY Mets’ game at Citi Field.  Below it’s flying by the Chrysler Building and below the jump, it’s passing the Met Life Building….

DIRECTV Blimp Flirts with the Empire State Building

Posted by LG On May - 14 - 2011

I shot this close-up footage of the DIRECTV blimp flying around the Empire State Building last fall on September 10, 2010 but never got around to turning it into a video until now. The blimp looped around and around, making some close passes by the observation deck.

That was some downpour! But even with the rain falling by the bucket (not to mention thunder and lightning!), these construction workers making repairs to the side of a New York City building kept on going! Kind of amazing they weren’t ordered to stop given the multiple weather advisories and dangerous conditions.

Whoever said that lightning doesn’t strike twice was wrong.  I caught on video three direct hits to the Empire State Building during the nasty lightning / thunder storm after midnight on April 13, 2011.  I actually saw a fourth, but sadly wasn’t filming at the time.  Oh well. That’s just ridiculous — the most hits I’ve ever seen before on the ESB in one night has been two. Amazing and awesome!

Lights Shut off for Earth Hour 2011 in New York City

Posted by LG On March - 26 - 2011

Earth Hour, the  annual worldwide event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) that takes a stand against climate change, occurred from 8:30-9:30pm on Saturday March 26.  I filmed New York City skyline as the lights turned off.

First the Chrysler Building lights went out.  30 Rock was next, (although the famous GE sign lights never went off).  4 Times Square and Bank of America Tower spires were next.  B of A’s crown followed.  Then the Empire State Building.  The rows of B of A’s crown took around a minute to fully turn off.

NYC’s 1/26/11 snowstorm featured rare thundersnow flashes — thunder and lightning during a winter snow storm. This was taken from the Union Square area in NYC looking over the west side and across the Hudson into New Jersey. Note: the visibility is very poor with the snow really coming down in this night video, but you can still see a few lightning flashes.

Huge fluffy snowflakes during the NYC snowstorm on 1/7/11. Big flakes, little accumulation.
