I posted pictures of the Empire State Building’s surprise light show last night.   Here are a couple of videos.  The first one shows it in competition with the changing lights of Bank of America Tower’s spire.  The second is a close-up of the top of the Empire State Building flashing the colors of the rainbow. The videos have been sped up by 2x for the sake of brevity.

Empire State Building’s cool light show tonight

Posted by LG On April - 11 - 2012

The Empire State Building gave its brightly lit neighbors with colorful flashing spires — Bank of America Tower and 4 Times Square — a run for their money tonight, changing colors from red to blue to green to yellow, to hot pink, then it put on a little show where the the colors of the rainbow flashed. I saw it on half of the south side of the building, but it looks like it was on the west side (and I’m guessing on half of the north side as well). Perhaps this was a light test and is a taste of things to come on the skyline?   Guess we’ll all have to stay tuned.  Here are some pictures (video hopefully coming later!):

Lit up in Christmas colors of Red and Green alongside the spire light shows at Bank of America Tower and 4 Times Square, the Empire State Building was part of its own light show on 12/19/11. Multiple lights bounced up and down the south side of the building intermittently, then darted from side to side along the midtown NYC skyline. Finally, the light stopped at the top of the building and then shot upward through the spire. No idea where the lights were coming from (anyone know?) but it was pretty cool and unexpected to watch!  Note: The grainy video (sorry!) was sped up 2x in the interest of brevity.

Incidentally, after months of relatively conservative Bank of America / 4 Times Square spire light shows where the light colors changed kind of slowly, as you can see in the video, they’re now getting back to the wacky flashier lights not seen since last fall / winter.   Here’s what they looked like last year.

New Year’s eve brought even more colorful light shows at the Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park) and Conde Nast (4 Times Square) with the Empire State Building still dressed up in Christmas Colors (*yawn*). Lots of nifty pulsing rainbow colors for the B of A and Conde Nast spires, and after midnight there were pinks, blues, greens. Right before midnight, the top part of the Bank of America Tower went dark with its lights turning off at the usual time. Kind of weird timing given the midnight celebration, they couldn’t have waited a few minutes just this one night?

If you watch carefully, you can catch a glimpse (a really small one!) of the celebratory fireworks at around the 2:41 mark on the right hand side of B of A toward the bottom. But they’re mostly obscured; blink and you’ll miss them. D

The footage was sped up 2X with roughly 7 minutes of video compressed into around 3 1/2 minutes.

This video of the Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park) light show was taken shortly after the lights went on just after 4:30pm and just before the sunset, which really beautifully shows off some of the angles of the building. The Conde Nast spire isn’t lit up initially but came on when it was a bit darker, as seen toward the end.

The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in New York City gave us another light show earlier this evening and it was way funkier than the colorful shows from a couple of weeks ago.  When I first noticed that the lights were on again, the spire was blue, which matched colors of the Empire State Building’s celebration of Chanukah.   A spire at the neighboring  Condé Nast Building (4 Times Square) was also lit up in blue — I hadn’t seen that spire lit up in colored lights before.  Then the show began.   The two spires coordinated / dueled  in a mostly in unison strobe-like display where they changed colors  (purple, blue, red, yellow, green & sometimes black),  pulsed, spun,  turned on and off, and moved in waves.   Pretty wild stuff and a colorful addition to the NYC skyline!

Turns out that the Bryant Park Christmas Tree lighting celebration was going on around the same time; I’d guess the light show was part of it, or may have been planned to coincide with it.

Here’s the first part of the two part video (If you only want to watch one, I actually prefer part 2 –  further down below the jump — which has more color  but  less strobe-like pulsing):

And here’s part 2:

Video: Bank Of America Tower NYC Light Show 11/18/10

Posted by LG On November - 18 - 2010

Usually the spire of the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in NYC is lit up white or is dark.. This evening (11/18/10) there was a short light show that ended around 6pm, where it changed from purple to red to yellow to green to blue.before going dark. Looks like the Empire State Building is gonna have some company in the ‘adding colors to the Manhattan skyline department’. Pretty cool!

Here’s a shorter slideshow version taken a couple of days later: Read the rest of this entry »
