New York City and the rest of the east coast were hit with a nasty crippling blizzard the day after Christmas 2010. This is how it looked just after the snow started to fall around 11am. The visibility was getting poor to the point where the skyline was completely missing an hour later. Bizarrely, there were also some lightning flashes and thunder during the evening, uncharacteristic of winter storms — I thought I was seeing and hearing things, but news reports confirmed it! And there were also high winds just short of hurricane speed according to the weatherman. Pity the poor travelers on Amtrak and those trying to catch flights, as trains and planes came to a standstill. Glad to be inside during this mess!

The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in New York City gave us another light show earlier this evening and it was way funkier than the colorful shows from a couple of weeks ago.  When I first noticed that the lights were on again, the spire was blue, which matched colors of the Empire State Building’s celebration of Chanukah.   A spire at the neighboring  Condé Nast Building (4 Times Square) was also lit up in blue — I hadn’t seen that spire lit up in colored lights before.  Then the show began.   The two spires coordinated / dueled  in a mostly in unison strobe-like display where they changed colors  (purple, blue, red, yellow, green & sometimes black),  pulsed, spun,  turned on and off, and moved in waves.   Pretty wild stuff and a colorful addition to the NYC skyline!

Turns out that the Bryant Park Christmas Tree lighting celebration was going on around the same time; I’d guess the light show was part of it, or may have been planned to coincide with it.

Here’s the first part of the two part video (If you only want to watch one, I actually prefer part 2 –  further down below the jump — which has more color  but  less strobe-like pulsing):

And here’s part 2:

Video: Bank Of America Tower NYC Light Show 11/18/10

Posted by LG On November - 18 - 2010

Usually the spire of the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park in NYC is lit up white or is dark.. This evening (11/18/10) there was a short light show that ended around 6pm, where it changed from purple to red to yellow to green to blue.before going dark. Looks like the Empire State Building is gonna have some company in the ‘adding colors to the Manhattan skyline department’. Pretty cool!

Here’s a shorter slideshow version taken a couple of days later: Read the rest of this entry »

Some highlights from the 38th annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade 2010. Love the long snake, huge dancing / bobbing and weaving skeletons and dinosaurs, and the general festive mayhem! And unlike 2009 this year it didn’t rain!

Here’s a video of Conan O’Brien’s big orange blimp making the pilgrimage along the Hudson to Yankee Stadium for the American League Playoff game 5. Notable landmarks that can be seen on the way: One Penn Plaza, New York Times Building

Wow! That was some crazy freaky lightning storm that hit New York City tonight! Against a backdrop of the Empire State Building lit up in the colors of Italy (red, white, green) to celebrate Columbus Day, we were treated to not only hours of lightning and thunder but some pretty nasty hail and pouring rain. This video is a bunch of the most dramatic lightning strikes over a period of an hour and a half strung together; the storm and lightning flashes lasted way longer. At around the 0:46 mark it looks like the Empire State Building took a direct hit.

Conan O’Brien’s big orange blimp paid NYC another visit on 10/10/10. Here’s a video of its floating over Greenwich Village’s East Village.

Visitors to the Empire State Building got a rare treat when the Met Life blimp floated through NYC several months ago and made passes right outside the observation deck. It flew around and around the city for much of the day and even cruised around the ESB as the sun was setting and after it was dark. This is a series of close up photos that I took and made into a slide show.

It’s so cool how close that big air whale passed by the ESB, although that building was supposed to originally be used as a blimp dock. Due to the high winds, that idea apparently didn’t work out so well as only one blimp was said to have successfully docked.

A violent lightning and thunder storm, dumping a torrential downpour, ripped through NYC in the late afternoon of 9/16/10. The whole thing was over in a matter of minutes, and then calm resumed.

The Empire State Building’s lightning rod got put to good use during this lightning / thunder storm — it got zapped by a direct hit! How neat is that?

And no, the ESB isn’t leaning.  That was a tripod malfunction that couldn’t be adjusted.  Oops!
