That was some downpour! But even with the rain falling by the bucket (not to mention thunder and lightning!), these construction workers making repairs to the side of a New York City building kept on going! Kind of amazing they weren’t ordered to stop given the multiple weather advisories and dangerous conditions.

Whoever said that lightning doesn’t strike twice was wrong.  I caught on video three direct hits to the Empire State Building during the nasty lightning / thunder storm after midnight on April 13, 2011.  I actually saw a fourth, but sadly wasn’t filming at the time.  Oh well. That’s just ridiculous — the most hits I’ve ever seen before on the ESB in one night has been two. Amazing and awesome!

Here’s more wild footage of NY City’s second lightning storm in a week  that hit on 9/22/10.   It features the Con Edison clock tower and Zeckendorf Towers at Union Square looking west into Brooklyn. There are loads of violently spectacular lightning bolts. The video was taken over an eighteen minute period and whittled down to less than two, showing the most dramatic strikes.

Con Edison is showing it’s own light show, with the clock tower colors changing from reds to greens.

The NY City area got its second wild weather in a week in the form of a lightning storm on the evening of  9/22/10.  The backdrop for this video is the midtown Manhattan skyline, featuring the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, etc.  It was a spectacular display of flashes and lightning bolts against the night sky.  There were so many that I just let the video run. This clip, around 9 1/2 minutes, is just a fraction of what I recorded, so I’ll probably put more up once I go through it.

A violent lightning and thunder storm, dumping a torrential downpour, ripped through NYC in the late afternoon of 9/16/10. The whole thing was over in a matter of minutes, and then calm resumed.

The Empire State Building’s lightning rod got put to good use during this lightning / thunder storm — it got zapped by a direct hit! How neat is that?

And no, the ESB isn’t leaning.  That was a tripod malfunction that couldn’t be adjusted.  Oops!
